Share The Harvest
Conservation Agent Bob Lyons is heading up the Share the Harvest program in Monroe County.
The share the harvest program is where deer hunters donate deer meat to the needy. Last year hunters donated over 177,000 lbs of deer meat. Here in NE Missouri, hunters donated 68,301 lbs of deer meat in 2003.
Monroe County participated in the share the harvest program for the first time last year. Faithwalk Ministry’s food pantry and 4 Quarter Processing in Perry were partnered in processing and distributing 1,100 lbs of deer meat to needy families in Monroe County.
Hunters were required to pay $40 to donate their deer last year. I am pleased to announce that through contributions from businesses and organizations, several hunters will be able to donate a deer to the share the harvest program in Monroe County free of charge. I am also pleased to announce that the Mark Twain Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has come onboard to help out with the program.
I believe that through a community effort, we can reduce the deer herd and take care of our needy. If you would like to make a contribution to the share the harvest program in Monroe County, please call Bob Lyons at 660-327-4092. To donate a deer, all you need to do is bring it to 4 Quarter Processing in Perry. The program also accepts partial deer donations.
